Challenge
DB Schenker’s SAP landscape lacked mature, standardised testing processes, creating delivery risk across a complex ECC 6 environment and limiting confidence in ongoing SAP and S/4HANA change.
Results
Resulting defined and embedded a test excellence operating model, delivering test strategy, governance, processes and interim leadership to improve control, reduce risk and build sustainable in-house capability.

About DB Schenker
Formed in 1872, DB Schenker is a division of German rail operator Deutsche Bahn and is now one of the world's leading global logistics providers of land transport, worldwide air and ocean freight, contract logistics and supply chain management services.
The Challenge
DB Schenker were running an early version of ECC 6 and had a complex landscape with 65 clients across 3 different instances, with a master client that distributes solutions to all, and local changes made in the individual clients.
After a period where SAP delivery sat within the Finance organisation, ownership had moved to IT, with a stronger focus on service management (ITSM) and process.
We initially met to discuss SAP test processes and the result of a testing maturity audit undertaken which found that test processes were immature with little in the way of documented test evidence, and no common approach to test scoping or execution.
DB Schenker asked Resulting to define how test excellence needs to operate to improve control, and reduce risk in delivery without significantly impacting efficiency.
Resulting Solution
Using a sprint-based approach, Resulting developed the following approach to improve testing procedures as well as changing the collective mindset and approach to testing, to support future business and IT driven change plans.
Key deliverables included:
- Testing vision including a roadmap for test maturity
- Test strategy and KPIs: Defined testing strategy, including roles and responsibilities, key test phases, test risk assessment and coverage.
- Approach for adoption and change management
- Detailed plan for implementation of testing improvements
- Cataloguing of Test Processes, Policies and Procedures
- Selection of Test Management Tool
Resulting also provided an interim test manager to kick-start progress towards the new ways of working. DB Schenker has now hired a permanent employee to take on test management in-house.
In addition, Resulting have supported the group-wide SAP S/4HANA Finance Transformation programme by providing a Technical Architect and an Integration Manager.
Benefits Delivered
DB Schenker has made significant progress in the improvement of test management. They now have their own test manager running a package of standardised test scripts for regression testing, which is now all managed in SAP Solution Manager.
As our client has become increasingly self-sufficient, Resulting has stepped back but continues to advise and support the DB Schenker testing team in the background.
